What is a 4K TV?
Today, a 4K TV is often a TV with a UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The moniker 4K for this resolution derives from the area of the American language, where the letter K is employed as a kilograms abbreviation and is hence synonymous with the number of 1000. In this instance, 4K stands for 4,000 and indicates the number of pixels in the horizontal image resolution. While 4K TVs are UHD TV sets with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, the phrase 4K TV has become a widespread one.
In addition to the 4K television resolution, the so-called true 4K or Cinema 4K is also present. The resolution of cinema 4K is 4,096 × 2,304 pixels, reaching 4,000 horizontal pixels. The resolution is employed on the big screen in digital cinema technology. The 4,096 x 2,304 pixels is not used in home cinemas or TV sets, hence 4K is used with a little lesser resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.

4K from the can?
You cannot watch films on DVD or Blu-ray in 4K quality. The resolution of DVDs is 720 x 576 pixels and thus corresponds to the SD resolution, while films on Blu-ray have a Full HD resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. You can currently only buy content with an Ultra HD resolution digitally and not on a data carrier.
Who is a 4K TV for?
You don’t have to toss away your old HD TV with the new 4K standard and replace it with a 4K-resolution gadget. If you mostly watch TV and are not a great fan of the sport, your HD TV is still sufficient for modern requirements.
For football enthusiasts who have a Sky Sports subscription, Formula 1 aficionados, and distinguished movies and show fans with a Netflix or Prime Video subscription, 4K television is worth a visit. You can already watch a lot of Ultra HD stuff. But if you want to buy a new TV anyhow, you can’t be hurt by choosing a 4K unit that will prepare you for the future. In their offerings, manufacturers are now increasingly relying on Ultra HD resolution. The 4K television is backward compatible
Of course, you may also use the gadget to view any video that is not broadcast in 4K resolution, if you choose a 4K TV. The devices are downstream compatible with SD, HD, and Full HD material. The TV employs 4K upscaling to adjust the image and upscale it to a larger number of pixels. Without upscaling, the image of a 720 x 576 pixel DVD at SD quality would only cover a very little fraction of the screen. This upscaling translates 720 x 576 pixels to the required 3,840 pixels per 2,160 pixels so that the full screen is filled with a minimal quality loss. But upscaling 4K does not match the quality of native 4K material.
Which screen size should I choose?
Two key variables that are directly associated with the purchase of a new TV are screen size and resolution. The difference between full HD resolution and ultra HD resolution is a total of 6,220,800 pixels since the Ultra HD resolution has a total resolution of 8,294,400 pixels four times that of Full HD, with a total resolution of 2,073,600 pixels. However, the naked eye can only see this difference with a screen size of more than 40 inches. In TVs with a reduced diagonal screen, the human eye perceives no change.
The bigger the screen, the clearer are the quality distinctions between Full HD and Ultra HD. Consequently, most manufacturers provide only TVs with a diagonal screen of 50 inches and greater in 4 K resolution. You still have a choice between HD-ready, Full HD, and Ultra HD only with smaller devices.
The distance between the chairs and the TV set also contributes to picking the correct resolution. The closer you sit on the TV, the fragmented and hazy the image is in full HD definition. The suggested Full HD resolution seat spacing is three times the image height. In the instance of a TV set with a 55-inch diagonal screen, the most common in American living rooms, this is a seating distance of 2.3 meters. However, 4K resolution is not necessary for devices having a screen diagonal less than 40 inches, because the human eye does not notice any distinctions between Full HD and Ultra HD of this size. LED, OLED, QLED – which screen technology is the best?

Plasma panels have had their day: Just a few years ago, the best screen technology was deemed. They were more robust, more contrasting, and sensitive than the conventional LCD screens at that time. However, this has since changed as LED displays are further developed, and plasma displays can no longer match modern LED displays due to their costly purchasing and power consumption. Therefore, they practically disappeared from the market.
The current LED screen consists of the so-called LED backlight fluid crystals illuminated by a backlight. This is a further advancement of the LCD that functioned with cold cathode lighting.
LED and LCD – what do the abbreviations mean? The LED acronym is the Light Emitting Diode. LCD denotes Liquid Crystal Display or Liquid Crystal Display in the United States. Both technologies use display liquid crystals. In LED televisions, however, light-emitting diodes are utilized whereas cold cathode tubes in LCD devices are employed.
To illuminate the screens, two alternative ways are used: full LED and edge LED. The latter form simply contains the LED bulbs at the edge of the screen, whilst they are dispersed via the entire screen with a direct or full LED. To uniformly illuminate all fluid crystals within the panel with the Edge LED, light is reflected in microscopic mirrors. Edge LED requires fewer LED bulbs than full LED and is thus cheaper and at the same time, the most used LED technology.
The problem with the black level
The black level is one of the most important concerns with the display of the TV image. Whether the TV operates full LED or edge LED, groupings of multiple liquid crystal cells are always enlightened or darkened. Full-LEDs with full-screen LED lights offer better results than Edge-LED, however, with local dimming or full-LED micro dimming, a little residual light from around the screen is always available when black pixels are shown, with light pixels remain.
No deep black possible: Real, deep black reproduction is impossible with an LED panel, which is highly necessary for sharp contrasts and bright colors, even if newer LED screens come very near to the desired results. So the remedy lies in another technology
OLED screens offer perfect black
The abbreviation OLED is the Organic Light Emission Diode. OLED is a self-illuminating organic diode. Unlike a standard LED TV, an OLED TV requires no backlight as an LED or full LED edge as the OLEDs generate and illuminate the image in one go. Black regions of the image are just turned off on the OLED panel, and true and deep black are portrayed. This means that the contrasts on an OLED panel are crisper, the colors are brighter and a realistic picture is recreated.
QLED screens with improved brightness and more colors
QLED is the latest in Samsung screen technology. Samsung is again exploiting this technology with inorganic light-emitting diodes. The Quantum Dots, which give the technology its name, provide higher brightness, incredibly precise and clear colors, and excellent detail with sharp contrasts.
Which screen technology is the best?
Which display technology you choose depends always on the price. The cheapest is an Edge LED LED LED LED TV. With these devices, despite 4 K resolution and HDR, you have to compromise the image quality, because of ghosting effects due to the LED backlight and light-emitting diodes, and pure and deep black with sharp contrasts cannot be displayed. These effects can still be seen with an LED TV with full LED, but less than with the Edge LED. The image so appears somewhat clearer and more contrasting.

There is no doubt, however, that OLED and QLED screens offer significantly better images than conventional LED televisions. OLED scores with deep black levels, clear colors, and high contrasts, but in terms of brightness and luminosity of the colors, organic light-emitting diodes cannot keep up with quantum dot technology.
For both an OLED and a QLED television you have to dig deeper into your pocket than for a conventional LED TV set. Which variant you ultimately decide on, however, is also heavily dependent on your requirements, because a bad TV picture is of course not provided by an LED TV with 4K resolution.
What HDR formats are there?
The abbreviation HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The technology improves picture contrast and gives you a TV picture with more vivid and realistic colors. One of the reasons for the improved display is that HDR achieves a color depth of at least 10 bits. In contrast, Standard Dynamic Range = SDR only achieves a color depth of 8 bits. In this way, a minimum of 1024 levels of brightness is reproduced in HDR, while SDR only offers 256 levels of brightness. There are different HDR formats. The most important are
- HDR10 with a color depth of 10 bits
- HDR10 + with a color depth of 10 bits and dynamic contrast
- Dolby Vision with a color depth of 12 bits and 68 billion different colors
The difference between HDR10 and HDR10 + is in the dynamic contrast. Unlike the HDR10, the HDR10 + does not use a fixed tone value mapping curve that is based on the brightest scene in the entire film, but a separate tone value mapping curve is created for each scene.
In addition, these two terms keep coming up in connection with HDR: Advanced HDR by Technicolor and HLG. These are alternative transmission options for HDR content. Hybrid Log-Gamma = HLG is a standard that was jointly developed by the British TV broadcaster BBC and the Japanese broadcaster NHK. HLG can be used to transmit images in HDR quality via cable or satellite, which without the appropriate technology is only possible when streaming over the Internet. The competition to HLG is now Advanced HDR, which was developed by Technicolor with Philips as a partner.
Functions and features of a modern 4K television
A modern 4K television is more than just a television set. Few televisions today focus solely on the core function of receiving digital television. Most models also offer you additional functions such as a recording function, a multimedia player, or an Internet connection. We will introduce you to the most important functions and features.
A triple tuner, with which you can receive television programs either via satellite, antenna, or cable, is standard today on modern 4K television sets. You will hardly find a model on the market that is not equipped with an integrated triple tuner that supports the modern transmission channels DVB-S2 and DVB-T2 as well as DVB-C.
Twin triple tuner
A twin triple tuner enables you to receive two signals at the same time via one receiving source. This allows you to record one program while you watch another.
PVR recording function
With many modern 4K televisions, you no longer need a hard disk recorder or receiver with a recording function. Rather, the devices are equipped with an integrated recording function and you only have to connect an external storage medium to record content.

Values between 10 and 20 milliseconds are ideal. The size of the TV also plays a role in gaming. Since you only need a small seat pitch with a 4K resolution, the gaming TV can be a decent size. Devices with a screen diagonal between 49 and 55 inches are particularly suitable.
If you want to use the television for games, you should make sure that it has a game mode. With special settings, this model enables a particularly smooth picture and harmonious gameplay. You have to put less emphasis on the refresh rate. A refresh rate of 60 Hertz is sufficient, as the game consoles work with 30 to 60 frames per second. At less than 60 Hertz, however, the picture can be jerky.

The most important connections on a 4K television are HDMI and USB connections. You can transfer both pictures and sound from external devices such as Blu-ray players via HDMI. What is a curved TV?
